I was leaving Singapore and starting my trek into the heart of Southeast Asia. Nevertheless, I was excited and felt really alive. Fear will do that. I asked a couple of different folks at the hostel reception, the day before my departure, where I could uncover the bus that would take me to Mersing. I had read in my guidebooks about the stunning island Pulau Tioman, and I needed to make my way to Mersing prior to catching a boat to this little piece of paradise. Unfortunately, I received various answers from diverse people, an it didn’t appear like anybody genuinely knew. I thought it would be best if I walk to the nearest bus station and ask for myself. It was just on the outskirts of Little India and I walked along ac**** filled with thick green muck, passing a makeshift tent and a man squatting inside, resoling shoes. I walked to the terminal and headed for the hand painted sign that read, ‘Ticket Counter Singapore – Johor Bahru Express’ I clarified with the man behind the counter, to reassure myself, that this bus was going my direction. He said that it was and that the ticket was 2.40 ringgit, which is much less than US. I asked if I ought to by my ticket right then and he replied – no – that the …
