Conservation: Releasing Baby Sea Turtles
Step 3 of the turtle conservation procedure, releasing baby turtles, is a very important time in which the turtles find out their way into the ocean (in order to discover their way back as adults to lay their own eggs). It is also essential for humans to monitor this stage, protecting the babies from predators (eg seagulls) that might snatch them on their way to the water. Welcome to Whitsunday & islands We arrived at Airlie Beach, Whitsunday on the Thursday afternoon and settled into 1 of the numerous local backpacker accommodation places. It wasn’t as posh as some of the other locations we had stayed at, but that was a excellent factor since it was significantly much more lively. The caravan park was set back from the principal road in some woodland which still gave it a tranquil feel to it. On the friday morning I awoke with a quite stuffy nose & felt quite ill too (man flu of course) but I’m in paradise & it was going to take much more than a cold to stop me enjoying myself. Later in the morning I was sitting in the chair outside the van when I spotted what I thought at very first was a crocodile crawling via the lengthy grass beside us, right after all we had been parked up next to a huge stream or creek as they call it over here. Anyway following practically falling of my chair in shock of being snuck up on by this tiny crocodile size thing it lifted its head out of the grass to reveal himself as a rather large lizard. Not long after far more of them started emerging from the creek bank. The actual name for this kind of lizard is a Lizard Monitor & they grow to between 1.five & 2 meters in length. They appear to be quite friendly & happy for me to photograph them, so I lay down on the floor & let them come to me. One of the principal …
