I would actually give this item 3 1/2 stars. It has some major faults, all of which can be overcome for a price. We have been using the Summer Day and Night for the last 3 years and wanted to upgrade to digital for the privacy (we were seeing our neighbors’ kids way too often). I did a lot of reading and chose the Safety 1st Prism for the following reasons:
-Volume control is on the side of the parent unit, not lost in a menu
-4x zoom feature
-Excellent video quality * (One camera we got had a terrible blurry picture. We ended up swapping it for a different camera and it was fine.)
-No interference from things around the house (Summer tended to have a lot of static)
-Night vision is impressive, very clear (better than the Summer)
-2.5″ color (during the day) display
-Video on/off button right on the front
Some things I don’t like:
-BATTERY LIFE = PATHETIC If you want to use this for more than about 2 hours it is not portable, has to be plugged in. Maybe I could buy a better battery?
-Short power cords on the cameras, about half the length of our Summer ones. You will not be able to mount this camera anywhere close to the ceiling without an extension cord.
-I cannot use two cameras with one parent unit. There are too many negatives. If you have two cameras and want to monitor both of them, the parent unit toggles back and forth every 10 seconds or so. Fine. But then if one of your children is about to do something you need to see and it switches to the other camera, there is no quick and easy way to jump back to the other camera. You have to go into a menu to change this, which takes longer than 10 seconds. There should be a camera toggle button somewhere to quickly take you to any camera you want to see. Safety 1st really messed that one up. Also, for us, when the parent unit was toggling between two cameras and the video is turned off, the audio goes off, too! This does not happen with one camera hooked up to one parent unit. But with two cameras on one parent unit the only way to keep the sound on continuously is to keep the video on continuously. Ridiculous.
-No quick way out of the menus. You have to back out of the menus. There is no button to push that will take you directly to the video again.
-Temperature feature is pointless and inaccurate.
-I would prefer the audio had a wider range. It would do well to have quieter lows and louder highs.
-The blue lights. VERY bright. Easily solved on the camera by putting a sticker over it (not sure if this would interfere with the video quality by depriving the camera of more light). The parent unit also has a bright blue light that pulses when charging. I simply have a soft cloth on the night stand and put the parent units face down. This blocks the light and the speaker is on the back of the parent unit anyway.
-Does affect our download speeds, but only when the parent unit is on and it has not caused any problems so far. We have experiments with changing the channel on our router to try to compensate.
So to sum it up, I would recommend these video monitors; however, we have a dedicated camera and parent unit for each of our children. We have VOX turned off, video set to always on, and then use the video on/off button to control the video. It seems like Safety 1st thought this out reasonably well as a single camera system and NOT AT ALL as a multi-camera system. Yes, buying two complete systems is more expensive but the other options were unacceptable to me (Summer Best View – screen freezing issues, Lorex – no way to keep sound always on, many others have inferior video quality). After sorting through all of the mostly unacceptable options, this was the only option for us that was acceptable in any configuration.

I received the Bebe Sounds Flat Panel LCD Video Monitor as a shower gift and it was totally useless. The interference was so bad that we literally could not see or hear anything. So, I started researching video baby monitors and finally decided to purchase this one and I am very happy with my purchase. Most importantly, the picture and sound are very clear. No interference at all from our wireless network or phones. We live in a three story house and I can clearly see and hear my son in his crib from anywhere in the house, even our basement TV room. I was pleasantly surprised that the picture remained so clear in the basement given that we can’t get a good signal from our wireless router down there. We use a white noise machine in the nursery so the voice recognition capability is nice. I also like that I can turn the volume off but still see the noise-indicating lights. The menu is very easy to use. Set up was a breeze. I usually plug in the hand held unit by our bed at night and haven’t had any problems with the battery life. Lastly, the styling is among the best available with a large screen.
I do not have a shelf or flat surface near the crib to set the camera on and I don’t want to mount it on the wall because I want it to be portable. The good news about this camera is that it is so lightweight that I can attach it to the wall with a velcro-type fastener without any concern about it falling and still take the camera with us when we travel. I debated whether to get a camera with zoom and pan capabilities (this one zooms only) but decided it wasn’t necessary since this camera shows the whole crib. The monitors that have a motor on the camera allowing them to move make them very heavy.
Unlike other reviewers, I don’t find the blue LED light on the camera very bright. However, there is a flashing blue light on the monitor when the battery is charging that is a stupid design flaw; there is also a tiny battery icon (like a cell phone would have) that also tells you how much battery life you have left or whether the battery is charging so the flashing blue light is definitely overkill. I like to sleep with the monitor right next to my bed so I suppose I could cover it with electrical tape if it becomes too distracting. Also, I agree with other reviewers that there is no need for the unit to beep when adjusting the volume. A volume dial would be more useful. I also have found the thermometer to be a few degrees warmer than the actual temperature but I don’t care about this feature.

Well, this was officially our third digital video monitor. We had no idea that it was so difficult for manufacturers to get it right. Ironically, the other two digital video monitors we purchased (one Graco, and one Safety 1st) were no longer available/made. So, the problems we were having with each must have been experienced by other consumers–why else would they stop making them? The most important thing for us in a monitor is the range. We live in a 4000 sq. foot house and our family room/t.v. is on the lower level, and the baby’s room is up two levels. The last Safety 1st we had, the range was great, best on the market that we could find. It was approximately 650 ft. However, after a short time of owning it, the screen just died.
Instead, of taking it back to Babies R Us, like I did for the other monitors, I decided to call the company. Big Mistake. Note, if you have issues, just return it to the store–much easier. The representative told me the range should be better than the last one I had, although this one only states 350 feet range. And, she talked it up with all the other bells and whistles, like the ability to add an extra camera with auto-switching the picture on the screen. That is nice, but when the range and/or screen is bad, that doesn’t help me.
Safety 1st set it up for Fed Ex to come to my house to pick up the monitor at their expense (which was nice), but they never put the order in, so I was without the monitor for a day–boxed up and waiting for Fed Ex, who never showed. This is where my anger began to surface. I called to ask what happened and had to wait a few more days for them to get Fed Ex over here. Once they picked it up, I had to call Safety 1st so they could confirm the tracking. I thought once that was done they would overnight me a new monitor. Nope. Instead, they told me it was going to be 7 – 10 business days for warehouse to pull it and then ship, etc. I was livid. I was already into almost two weeks without a working monitor and now didn’t have anything. They didn’t seem too concerned about the delay in having a working monitor and were not helpful. They told me they don’t have a contract to do overnight shipping!!! What?! My son was sick with fever and not being able to see/hear him without waking him was driving me crazy. I told them that next time I would return directly to the store for they made it painful to return their “defective” products.
Alas, the new one arrived and I’ve only had it TWO days and the range stinks. We still cannot go into our family room with it. And, the battery life does last about 3 hours as I was told. I just put my son down for a nap, and I can’t get the screen to come on the monitor! Here we go again! So, we are done with Safety 1st—sounds good on paper but they can’t get it to work. I see the other reviewer liked it, but had a problem with the screen…seems like they need to look into their screen issues. When the screen didn’t come on, I decided to write this review.
We’re about to buy our 4th video monitor and we are looking at Home Sentry Interference Free 2 Camera Auto Switching Digital Monitor From Safe Baby. Auto Switching with 8 Camera Capability. Here’s hoping.

the video quality is excellent. we have a wireless router in our home and so far no interference. i agree w/ the other reviewer who said to turn off VOX, set to video Always On, and use button to control video on/off. the camera unit is lightweight and easy to hang on the wall and has nice range of motion (manual). i use this to monitor my 19 month old in the playroom while i am in the next room cooking or doing dishes. i am planning to get a 2nd camera to monitor my newborn as well.
2 features i would like to see: charging dock & video out jack. is annoying to plug in the parent unit and would be awesome to be able to plug it into a larger screen such as a laptop or tv. too bad these features were left off while totally useless features like calendar, alarm, clock, & thermometer were left in…must i be vigilant in detecting a drastic temperature change in the nursery that must be monitored??? will a fireball or glacier be sliding by??

I’ve been using this monitor for about a week now and have been pleased so far. I live in a one-story 2500 sq.ft. house and my son’s bedroom is on the exact opposite end of the house from my bedroom. We have a wireless network set up and use cordless phones. I have had no interference issues and the range seems to be fine. The menu options for customizing voice activation, screen timeout, temp./time, etc. are easy to navigate. The aesthetics of the system are sophisticated too. The battery life seems really good. I leave it plugged in next to my bed through the night, but unplug it to move around the house while my son naps for up to 2 and a half hours. The only criticisms I have are in regards to the lack of some features that other “comparable” video monitors offer. I would have liked for the parent unit to have a charging dock rather than having to plug a cord in to the side of it. Also, it would be nice to be able to pan with the camera, in addition to zoom. My son is fairly active in his sleep and sometimes the camera angle isn’t quite right. Lastly, the zoom option goes from normal to 2x to 4x. To be quite honest, it would be nice to have the option of something between 2x and 4x; it’s a pretty big jump. All of these features would be nice but they are certainly not deal breakers in my book. The monitor works quite nicely: no interference, adequate picture quality, good night vision, good sound quality (not as sensitive as my digital audio monitor but still fine) and peace of mind. I am due with a second child very soon and will be checking out any issues with adding a camera in the near future, but based on my experience so far, I’m not worried.
