Will it drain the batteries?
Question by Momma B: Will it drain the batteries?
I will be using The First Years “peace of mind, two receiver baby monitor”, It has the option of using batteries and ac adapters… My question is if I place batteries in the monitors and plug in the ac adapters will it still use the batteries for power? I more or less just want the batteries in the monitors in case of loss of power or in case I need to move it, I just don’t want to use batteries all the time as they are unreliable!!
I read all the safety information and it doesn’t say not to use batteries and ac power together but it doesn’t say its ok either?? So I guess my second question is will it cause the batteries to explode cause if that’s the case Ill just use one or the other!!??

Nope, it won’t drain the batteries!
As long as the adapter is plugged in, it will use the power from the wall. If in the event the power goes out, the batteries should kick in!
Hope this helps!
No it wont wear them out faster, but I do think it may have a possibility to make the batteries leak. I know it says on many appliances with battery and ac power to not keep the batteries in while you have it plugged it.
YEAH
the batteries are a back up source, if you use them always they should last quite a while
God Bless
usually if something takes batteries and has the option for an adapter it will only use the batteries if the adapter is not plugged in. I think you dont have to worry about the batteries being drained when the adapter is plugged in.
I am not criticizing your choice to use the monitor, just musing a bit. I got through 3 kids w/o one of these and it seemed that my hearing became incredibly acute for that first whimper or cry. Today I can hear the kids when they come home at any hour and they are almost all out of the house. Just a thought, nothing more
Most of these have a mechanical switch which will disconnect the batteries when you plug in the AC adapter, which means you have to unplug the AC adapter in the event of a power loss to use the batteries. The ones which do not disconnect the internal batteries are designed to use rechargeable batteries. Some have a selector switch so you can choose to use rechareables or regular. If you put regular batteries into one designed for rechargeables, you will cause damage to the batteries, which will get hot and may explode. Only the kind with rechargeable batteries will automatically keep going in the event of a power loss, since with the rechargeable kind, the batteries always run the device with the AC adapter just keeping the batteries charged, much like a portable cordless phone works, charging while in the cradle, operating off batteries when not.
Nope it shouldn’t drain the batteries because when its plugged in there is a mechanical switch that “tells” it to use the power adapter source of electricity rather than the battery.
I have the same ones and I always keep the batteries in them because of power failure. My dad is an electrician, I asked him about the danger and he said to change the batteries (while the adapter is in use) about once a month (if they don’t die before then) to prevent acid corrosion. It won’t drain the batteries because the AC is an alternating current and the batteries DC is a direct current. The monitor has some intelligence to take the power from the alternating current.
If your worried i would look for the phone number, for the company and call and ask them. they should know better then anyone.
