Each year an estimated thirteen million babies are born too soon. More than one million of them die as a result of their prematurity. Yet experts say many early births can be prevented. The report came from the March of Dimes and the World Health Organization. Christopher Howson is the vice president for global programs at the March of Dimes, a nonprofit group. He says there are a number of simple, low-cost interventions that can improve the chances of a full-term birth. Mister Howson said “We should treat malnutrition in women both before and during pregnancy. We should treat infections that increase risk. We should monitor pregnancies carefully for signs of trouble. And should that baby be born preterm, we should care for that baby by providing a package of interventions that have been shown to be tried and true and very effective.” For example, there are programs in Africa that teach the skin-to-skin method, also known as kangaroo care. Mothers learn to carry preterm babies in front instead of the traditional African way of carrying a baby on the mother’s back. Question by sandy: how is this fair?? foster siblings get job handed to them?
i am 21 and just recently quit a crap job that i’ve had for 3 years. i had been apply for various jobs, non stop for over a year before i finally got hired somewhere better. i worked hard to find this new job.

i have 2 teenage foster sisters, who have been with us for 8 months. they have never had any kind of job before and their social worker sets them both up with jobs, in a daycare, just “monitoring” toddlers and kids 9-5. this was only maybe 3 weeks long, temp, summer thing. i’m annoyed, as is my actual sisters, because we all had to work on our own to find a job. while these two girls, who have absolutely no common sense whatsoever, just get jobs handed to them by the state.

my parents have been doing foster care since i was born, so 21 years. i’ve never enjoyed the fact that we do this, i know that sounds terrible but it really is hard on the biological family, that part, no one sees, nor cares about. foster kids in our home have always been babied by their S.W, and would get everything they wanted, mainly toys and clothes. now its jobs?

Question by Laura C: 4 month old rolling over and sleeping face down…it’s getting ridiculous!?
I know there probably isn’t a real good answer to this problem other than, ‘flip her back over’, but our just turned 4 month old little girl is as stubborn as her daddy and insists on flipping over onto her stomach and night and attaching herself like a barnacle onto the mattress with her mouth.

The other night I put her to bed, then all of a sudden heard these Darth Vader-like sounds coming through the monitor and thought “I should NOT be able to hear her breathe through the monitor!!” and went tearing upstairs to find her on her tummy, face down in the mattress, mouth wide open and breathing out of the sides of her mouth. I flipped her back over, but she keeps doing it. I get up every hour or less to check on her to make sure she’s not doing that… its getting out of control.

I talked to the doctor, and he said that she’s still a little young for her to be doing this without problems. He said babies this young, even though she is able to flip herself over to that point (contd)
She is still a slight SIDS risk because of re-breathing carbon dioxide for long periods of time. She may not wake up or move her head before she would be in trouble from it.
SO, what can I do? Any tips? Really, I think I am just stuck waking up 10 times a night to check on her. And OF COURSE she just started sleeping through the night, but now I am getting up more than I did when she wasn’t sleeping through the night!!

wow that’s really scary..but I might have a solution for you. They make these little cone looking pillows that have a little pad attaching them that you can prop around your baby and she lays on the pad in the middle so that she can’t roll at all. They definitely have them at Babies R US and probably Walmart too. You can Velcro them to fit snugly on each side of your baby. Hope this helps!

Question by KS: Pediatrician has concern for my son’s weight, I can’t see what the problem is?
At his year check up (done at 14 months,) the pediatrician announced she is concerned for his weight and placed him on “monitoring.” (Frequent checkups/weigh-ins, plus listing what I feed him.) His weight has started to level. He was a VERY chunky baby in the beginning, and has since thinned out a bit. He was in the 90th % in the first few months and is now at the 40th % a year later.

I tried to explain that since learning to walk he hardly sits still and probably burns a ton or calories. I also mentioned he was (and still is slightly) breastfed which would have made a difference on the charts. That was countered with, “No, formula and breastmilk has the same number of calories, so there would be no difference in weight gain.”

I feed him three times a day with snacks in between. Everything is healthy, fruits, veggies, cereals, etc. (Although the doctor balked when I said he eats what I eat for meals, including meat…supposed to be feeding him meals for toddlers whatever that is?) He drinks several cups of milk a day, drinks water, no juice. His portions are nearly as large as mine and he eats the majority of it.

I seriously don’t see what is wrong and why he needs to be monitored now. But they offered little in suggestions. Only to give him milk with his meals, which I do. Also told to feed him toddler appropriate meals. When I asked her to explain, I am supposed to buy iron-fortified cereal, but all the ones he eats claim they are on the box. Also, I thought oatmeal would be okay for breakfast, but it is not?

Formula and breastmilk do NOT have the same number of calories, your ped is wrong! I would seriuosly consider asking your friends if theirs are better, cuz i would not want to stick with that guy.

Oatmeal is great for breakfast. It’s filling and oats are extremely healthy and it’s easy for them to swallow.

If they want him to have more iron, just make sure he snacks on cheerios along with everything else. The multigrain ones taste great to toddlers.

It’s normal for a breastfed baby to be chunky at first and then get thin when he starts walking. This is the way babies are supposed to be, but here in America we have a real childhood obesity problem and formula contributes to that problem.
