Question by Q T: Was I dreaming, Sleep walking or losing my mind?
First off, I am a serious (surprisingly funny sometimes), easy going, optimistic, family oriented person. I write from home and am happily married with two sweet babies. No mental health problems but I do have sleeping problems (insomnia). I rarely get a good night’s sleep, when I do, I wake constantly and have many vivid easily recalled dreams.
But last night was the first time I’ve ever experienced this (sort of, I did sleepwalk and talk once when I was a teen when my little sister was in the hospital but this was different).
My husband says I was in the middle of a dream state but I wonder if I’m just plain losing my mind.
Here’s what happened:
I was asleep and thought I heard a toddler say over the baby monitor, “Where’s my Mommy?”
Then I heard my husband groggily ask me, “What’s wrong?” That’s when I realized I was standing in the middle of my bedroom. I looked at my husband and thought, “Who is that (man)! Was I sleeping there? Where is the Mommy that’s supposed to be here? Is she missing?”
I felt scared and scooted off to my children’s room, sat down on the bed next to my oldest and instantly felt, “Safer.” And then I felt worried and thought, “Where’s my Mommy? Why am I here?” I felt like I was 7 yrs old. (It was unreal how weird that felt) Immediately after I asked myself why I was there, I looked at my children again (without realizing what my relationship was to them) and felt very panicky and thought, “(more importantly) Where is THEIR Mommy!? Why are they alone?”
(keep in mind, this all happened very quickly) Then I felt very confused and worried and scared and trying to figure out what was going on, I kept looking at (my) kids and trying to process why I was there… when I suddenly realized **I** was their Mommy!
I said aloud, “I’m their Mommy!!” And then I felt normal again but I was very disturbed by what had just happened and asked myself how could I ever forget my kids who I love more than anything. And why I had felt like a child and didn’t know where I was!
If I could describe it any other way, it was like my 7 yr old self had just woken up in my adult body and was totally confused as to where it was and why the “Mom” who was supposed to be there was missing.
I have no idea what to think of this. Was I sleepwalking and dreaming? Was it psychological?

As a mom myself, I was always kind of half asleep/half awake when my kids were little. So it is not strange that you would be hearing things or fearing that you were not attending to their needs, even in your sleep.
Most dreams are messages from the subconscious mind, which picks up on cues and clues that the conscious mind is in denial of. Basically, I believe that there are FOUR types of dreams: 1. symbolic dreams; 2. dreams that rehash the day’s events; 3. messages from the subconscious that are straight messages and not symbolic, and finally, 4 psychic/premonition dreams or dreams that actually predict coming events.
I have had many psychic dreams. It is a gift. Those who do not or have not had them do not understand the gift.
