As you watch this commercial via the internet on your Pentium-processed computer with its hi-def flat screen monitor, just remember that what your seeing in the Radio Shack commercial from 1984 is what home computers first looked like: monochrome monitor, two floppy discs for software and slow processing. It was all high-tech stuff back then. This glorified calculator/ word processor could be yours for only 99.00….and those were 1984 dollars. We have, indeed, come a long way, baby….. Q&A: Pediatrician has concern for my son’s weight, I can’t see what the problem is?

Question by KS: Pediatrician has concern for my son’s weight, I can’t see what the problem is?
At his year check up (done at 14 months,) the pediatrician announced she is concerned for his weight and placed him on “monitoring.” (Frequent checkups/weigh-ins, plus listing what I feed him.) His weight has started to level. He was a VERY chunky baby in the beginning, and has since thinned out a bit. He was in the 90th % in the first few months and is now at the 40th % a year later.

I tried to explain that since learning to walk he hardly sits still and probably burns a ton or calories. I also mentioned he was (and still is slightly) breastfed which would have made a difference on the charts. That was countered with, “No, formula and breastmilk has the same number of calories, so there would be no difference in weight gain.”

I feed him three times a day with snacks in between. Everything is healthy, fruits, veggies, cereals, etc. (Although the doctor balked when I said he eats what I eat for meals, including meat…supposed to be feeding him meals for toddlers whatever that is?) He drinks several cups of milk a day, drinks water, no juice. His portions are nearly as large as mine and he eats the majority of it.

I seriously don’t see what is wrong and why he needs to be monitored now. But they offered little in suggestions. Only to give him milk with his meals, which I do. Also told to feed him toddler appropriate meals. When I asked her to explain, I am supposed to buy iron-fortified cereal, but all the ones he eats claim they are on the box. Also, I thought oatmeal would be okay for breakfast, but it is not?

Help? Suggestions?

Formula and breastmilk do NOT have the same number of calories, your ped is wrong! I would seriuosly consider asking your friends if theirs are better, cuz i would not want to stick with that guy.

Oatmeal is great for breakfast. It’s filling and oats are extremely healthy and it’s easy for them to swallow.

If they want him to have more iron, just make sure he snacks on cheerios along with everything else. The multigrain ones taste great to toddlers.

It’s normal for a breastfed baby to be chunky at first and then get thin when he starts walking. This is the way babies are supposed to be, but here in America we have a real childhood obesity problem and formula contributes to that problem.

THAMILVANY EYE WITNESS OF MULLIVAIKAL BLOOD BATH ON BEACH – 2

That was when the reality of the war hit Gnanakumar for the first time. “It was raining and … you could see everywhere on the road the blood is running with the water and the bodies were left there because there was no-one to identify who was dead and who is alive, the bodies were just laid down on the floor and that’s the first time I saw dead bodies and wounded people crying out, shouting.” Wherever they stopped, they built a bunker, digging down until they could stand up in the hole, cutting down palm branches and laying them across the top for a roof and packing sandbags on the top and around the sides. As the frontline advanced, trapping as many as 300000 people inside a shrinking enclave of LTTE-held land, Gnanakumar went to the makeshift government hospital, which had moved into a former primary school, and volunteered to help, dressing wounds and administering first aid. Her laboratory training had not prepared her for anything like this, but she learned as she went along. As the fighting intensified, they were treating as many as 500 people every day in two rooms. “They had a shortage of medicine but they had to somehow save the people. The last two weeks or so there was a shortage of everything.” With replacement blood running out, she had to filter what she could from the patients through a cloth before feeding it back into their veins. When the anaesthetics ran short, they diluted them with distilled water. “I watched when there was a six-year-old boy,” she

weight charts no longer for healthy kids?

Question by danlein: weight charts no longer for healthy kids?
I am a mother of 4.
My height is in the 60th percentile, my weight is in the 3rd percentile.
My 8 year old’s weight is in the 6th%
My 6 Year old isn’t even on the chart at 35lbs
My 3 year old is at 48%
and my 1 year old is at the 3rd%
Their father is slightly below average weight and height.
Our new Dr. is “very concerned” about their weight.
I explained they come from a geneticly SMALL family but he continues to ask us to come in to be “monitored”
He seems to be hinting around an accusation of neglect, which is completely absurd.
My children eat 3 meals a day as well as 2-3 snacks.
I even buy about 0 a month worth of Boost high calorie drinks for the kids.
We eat healthy food…we just always have. My children do not enjoy exxcessive amounts of junk food because it has never been part of their diet.
The Dr’s main concern is how they compare to the infamous “weight chart”
My children don’t gain as fast as other kids.
I suspect all these fat kids raised on nothing but McDonalds are throwing the curve off.
My kids are healthy and geneticly as they should be.
I don’t see what the big deal is??
I was a 9lb baby…that doesn’t mean I should follow that percentile curve my whole life!! Why would a dr. expect “average sized” kids from less than average sized parents?!

Q&A: Irregular Hearbeat.. Now they’re sending me to a Maternal Fetal Specialist :(?

Question by Allycea’s Mommy: Irregular Hearbeat.. Now they’re sending me to a Maternal Fetal Specialist :( ?
I went for a DR appointment last Monday, and during the routine heartbeat check, the doctor noticed that the baby had an irregular heartbeat. I was sent for an ultrasound sound, and sure enough, the baby’s heart beat was irregular (it would skip every so often). He said that it could be caused by too much caffeine ingestion (which over the weekend, I drank about 6-7 glasses of tea, plus a small cup of coffee Monday morning). OK so they wanted me to lay off the caffeine and go by and have another check up ultrasound on Wednesday. The baby’s heartbeat was regulating, but still skipped a couple times, PLUS the ultrasound tech noticed what to her looked like the beginnings of placenta abruptio. So they sent me up to L&D to “monitor” me. As the day went on, I had 2 more ultrasounds done, and by the time the Maternal Fetal Specialist came in to do his ultrasound, he couldn’t see anything wrong with the placenta, only thing he noticed was the heartbeat. He said it was fetal arrhythmia, and they want to send me to get an echo-cardiogram. The maternal fetal specialist said basically that he’s not concerned with the heartbeat issue, and that it’s not very umcommon. I’m still really scared though. We’ve never had any problems with the baby’s heartbeat until now, its always been really strong. But what worries me even more is the fact that while I was in the hospital, they gave me 2 steriod shots to help with the baby’s lung development in case I have to deliver early, and put me on Procardia to stop the braxton hicks contractions that I’m having.

I’m only 34 weeks, and terrified that something might be wrong with the baby and that I’ll deliver early. Has anybody gone through this or does anybody have some words of advice? I’m really freaking out.

Best answer:

Answer by Kiley Angel
Well I can completely understand how scared you must be but, if you say the specialist didn’t seem all that concerned about it then that is probably a good sign that it may be a minor problem that is not life threatening and will be able to be dealt with easily or not at all. My only real advice is keep in touch with your doctors and I am sure if there is real cause for concern at any point they will make you aware of the situation. Try and relax and pray for the safety and well being of your little one!
